Perth driver could lose his eye after Bentley assault

A Perth ride-share driver may have to choose between having his eye surgically removed or going blind after he was allegedly brutally assaulted when he asked two passengers to buckle up.

Adam, who does not want his full name used, picked up two men in Bentley on Boxing Day while working for a ride-sharing company when the trip turned violent.

The vehicle went just 400m on Hedley Street when Adam pulled over because the men would not put on their seatbelts.

He was then punched so hard that he has been left blinded in one eye.

After the alleged attack and bleeding profusely from his eye, Adam managed to drive himself to Royal Perth Hospital.

He underwent an operation and spent five nights in hospital.

“I just did nothing wrong,” he said. “Over nothing I lost everything.

“That trip I was going to make around five dollars.”

The 33-year-old has an appointment on Monday where it is likely he will find out if his eye will need to be surgically removed. He said that was the best case scenario, because if doctors do not remove it, he could go blind in both eyes.

With his injury, Adam cannot work, which means he and his wife — who is pregnant with their first child — cannot pay their rent and have to move in with friends.

“I can't do anything at this stage in order to support her and it just really hurts me,” he said.

Police have charged two men over the alleged attack.

According to police, it did not take long to catch the alleged assailants — they ordered another car straight after Adam escaped.

A fundraising page has been set up to help the couple.
